Counseling / Therapy - APPROACH TO TREATMENT

I try to get to the heart of the matter by focusing on what is most vivid and poignant in the here and now and on the meaning of that experience. Almost inevitably, what is linked to this process is cut off needs and desires which are not felt to be legitimate. I help my patients to reconnect with the longings that underlie states of depression and anxiety, and become manifested in a host of compulsive and harmful behaviors like drugs, alcohol, food, sex, shopping, exercising, keeping busy, etc.

My approach is informed by psychodynamic theory especially attachment theory which has been substantiated by research to account for the quality of human relationships. Couples treatment has been influenced by the marital research of John Gottman and Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy.

It’s important to keep in mind that whatever approach a therapist may use to help you solve problems, above all else, it is the relationship with the therapist that should be of primary consideration. The effectiveness of treatment is dependent upon the quality of that relationship. In other words, you should feel that there is a good fit between you and the therapist. In addition to being well-trained and experienced, I have 30 years of experience. I offer an emotionally safe and non-judgmental environment. I am an open and curious as well as direct and responsive.
